Mildred Council: A Lifetime of Service and a Passion for Youth on the Mayoral Ballot
A Life Dedicated to Service. A Vision for Greenville.
Mildred A. Council, affectionately known as “Everybody’s Mayor,” has spent her life walking beside the people she serves. From advocating for seniors in West Greenville to shaping future leaders through 4-H, she has built a legacy of connection, compassion, and results. With over 20 years on the Greenville City Council and 25 years of dedicated service with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Council now steps forward to continue her life’s work, officially announcing her candidacy for Mayor of Greenville, NC.
“Greenville is not just where I live—it’s where I’ve dedicated my life,” states Council. “Now, I’m eager to serve at an even higher capacity.” Her campaign reflects the same dedication to the community that has been the foundation of her public service journey.
Proven Leadership at Every Level
With over 40 years of experience in health, education, and government, Council has consistently achieved positive outcomes for the community. During her tenure on the City Council, she has:
Her leadership has always focused on creating a stronger, more inclusive city, ensuring that no one is left behind.
A Champion for the Next Generation
Council’s passion for youth is more than a talking point—it’s a lifelong mission. As the longtime leader of a local 4-H Youth Development Club, she has mentored hundreds of students, guiding them to public speaking success, leadership roles, and college scholarships.
When told Greenville wasn’t big enough to host the North Carolina Youth Leadership Convention, she stood firm: “Yes we are!” Her determination proved that small cities can achieve big things.
Her youth advocacy also includes:
Global Service with Local Roots
In 2024, Council journeyed to Luanda, Angola, where she collaborated with local volunteers to support an orphanage housing 68 girls. The most pressing need was not for toys or technology, but for washable sanitary pads. With the assistance of five skilled sewing volunteers, they created and delivered numerous kits, addressing a vital and ongoing requirement for the girls' health and dignity.
Council also partnered with the Pitt County All Stars 4-H Club to engage their local community back home, empowering volunteers to provide additional support for the orphanage. This initiative included acquiring resources such as a commercial oven to enhance daily operations.
“It wasn’t just about giving—it was about restoring hope,” Council remarked. “It was essential for them to witness that compassion transcends city limits. When young people explore the world, they discover their purpose.”
“That experience moved me profoundly,” Council reflected. “So we took further action.”
“When we arrived at the orphanage, there were 68 girls—but only around 30 beds. Some were sleeping on the floor. When we inquired about their needs, they didn’t ask for much. Some just wanted sheets and blankets. That deeply touched me. So we did more. We helped renovate the orphanage, supplied a commercial oven, and equipped them with the means to care for themselves with dignity. It wasn’t simply about giving—it was about restoring hope.”
— Mildred A. Council
Council advocates for nurturing future leaders while leading by example—both locally and globally.
“It was vital for them to see that compassion knows no boundaries,” she stated. “When young people observe the world, they identify their purpose.”
